Research into the Minerals Value Chain is one of the core activities of Minerals to Metals, harnessing the fundamental expertise brought by its core and associated members in a mutually informative and cross-disciplinary way. As is shown in the schematic above, the value chain is founded on an understanding of process flowsheets, which in turn are founded on fundamental chemical engineering principles, which in turn are founded on fundamental physical and chemical principles.
On the other hand the value chain plays itself out within the environmental, and socio-economic spheres, where aspects such as energy, water and wastes come to play, and where the environmental legacies of the past and the needs of the future define the social licence to operate this value chain in the present. While the fundamental research determined research of MtM in the early years, the focus has now shifted towards understanding the minerals value chain in the broader context.
