World Economic Forum (2016)
MtM started working with the World Economic Forum (WEF) by participating in the consultation process for the preparation of the document entitled, ‘Mapping Mining to the Sustainable Development Goals: An Atlas’. This was drafted by the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the United Nations Development Programme, and the WEF, and released on 19th July in New York. As a follow-on to this, a project was scoped by MtM entitled ‘Operationalising the SDGs for mining in Emerging Economies,’ and was presented at a meeting in New York on 20th Sept.
As a consequence of this, Corey Beavon (MPhil) is undertaking an internship at the WEF from July to Nov 2016, and is working on ensuring that the Sustainable Development Goals are integrated into the Responsible Mining Development Initiative (RMDI) which is a flagship project at WEF. The RMDI is a multi-stakeholder tool that provides practical mechanisms to measure and communicate the needs and expectations of different stakeholders in the mining industry and is currently being implemented in Guinea.
